Possessing the means of production, banishing the phantom of scarcity!
Paper Ghost is a shared screen-printing space in Greenfield MA and exists to put the means of creating high quality prints into the hands of working-class artists. Providing access to creative resources, opening shared workspace, and caring for the natural world around us are some of the values that drive our approach to investing in our artistic community. Through grant funding and community support we provide members with access to screen printing materials so they can produce their own work without the usual overhead cost of the printing process. Members choose their own studio hours, have access to all the necessary materials, and keep whatever they print to use however they wish. The space and materials will be shared by members, creating a culture of caring for each other by respecting and maintaining shared resources.
The idea of communities sharing resources is reflected in the natural ecosystems all around us. This inspires us to be conscious of the effect our work has on the land and water system. We do not use harmful cleaning chemicals, we minimize the use of disposable supplies, and we use the process of flocculation to remove acrylic materials from wastewater.
Because the studio is shared by up to 12 members and is also situated amongst other art studios at community hub Lupinewood Collective, it forms an intersection where creatives of all disciplines can overlap with each other and further weave the fabric of local solidarity. Subcultures, online spaces, and artistic communities are becoming more and more fractured as social and economic rifts widen. Scarcity turns community into competition, sustainability into exploitation, and resources into hordes. Paper Ghost Print Studio seeks to banish the phantom of scarcity, and live into a dream of a communal creativity and solidarity.
We have enough if we share.
